Standardization
Industry is in the process of installing new microprocessor-based Advanced Traffic Controllers (ATC), which provide welcome features such as transit signal priority and adaptive signal timing. In addition, the new controllers can be standardized to facilitate the possibility of employing a unified traffic signal management system.
New traffic signal management systems make use of the NTCIP Center-to-Center (C2C) protocol, which will be very helpful in ensuring that adjacent agencies will be able to successfully coordinate traffic signals.
Improved Communication and Control
Portions of the transportation corridors in many areas are not connected to a central control area. By connecting these signals to a central control room, the task of coordinating traffic signals is greatly improved.
Taking Advantage of New Algorithms
Traffic Responsive Signal Timing (TRPS) can adjust signal timings based on the current volumes of traffic, which can be monitored using actuators and count stations.
